Q: What kind of food causes migraines?
I get really bad migraines and my Doctor says my diet might be responsible for it but hasn’t actually taken the time to tell me what foods cause migraines. I don’t eat alot of cheese or chocolate. I do like to drink quite a bit of tea with sweetener.
Is there a specific diet I should swap to to help with this problem?
My diet isnt that bad but I’ll look into this MSG thing.
What about white bread? I do eat sandwiches quite alot because I’m on the go.
A: Different people have different triggers, SOME of which may be diet related. For me the food/drink triggers include chocolate, strawberries, cheese, onion/garlic/chives (or even its smell), alcohol and over-ripe bananas. Non food triggers include: not eating, stress and tiredness. The biggest improvement came from receiving treatment for a previously undiagnosed thyroid problem (which is not commonly associated with migraines).
To find your triggers, it can be helpful to keep a diary including details of what you ate.
There is a LOT of nonsense talked about diet. Most of us are not intolerant of mono-sodium glutamate and, while the caffeine in tea and coffee is mildly diuretic, there is a net fluid contribution to your body from drinking these things.
Q: Drinking red wine causes migraine headaches for me. Will drinking concord grape juice cause migraines?
Doctors are advising adding 1 glass of red wine or concord grape juice a day for health benefits. I can’t drink the red wine and am hoping I can drink the grape juice.
A: I’ve had severe migraines for years, and one of the only “food” items i could narrow it down to was red wine! It’s almost an immediate migraine after drinking it. I mentioned it to my doctor and he said for sure, the red wine is a culprit!! Evidently, red wine is fermented a different way than white wine or rose`. Sure enough, other wines don’t affect me the same way. The grape juice shouldn’t bother you, since it’s not fermented.
By the way, a glass of white or rose` is just as benificial. ( one glass, not a night of drinking!
Q: Does calcium stop or causes migraines?
Lately on the onset of my migraines “the aura” I run to chew a calcium supplement and drink water. The headache is diminished 70%. Someone with research evidence please tell me whats happening.
A: Calcium isn’t the cause of headaches or migraines. If so half of our forefathers would have died from them, right? The cause of headaches/migraines is the back and neck muscles. When they get tight they give off their pain. When they get really tight they give off a real intense signal. When that signal reaches the brain, the intensity of it makes the brain feel only pain. Then we have been taught that it if it is in the brain it is caused by the brain. Wrong, for when you release the problem sending the message the pain stops as well. There is one place you can ’short’ migraines out as well, and that is applying pressure to the temples. That is pretty much a temporary relief. Here is how to get long lasting relief, getting the muscles that are usually involved to be free so that they don’t trigger another episode to begin with:
Back of head:
Place your hands behind your head and put your fingers on the muscles on your neck. Press a moderate pressure onto them and hold it. Now relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After 30 seconds, slowly lower your head until your neck is fully extended. Then release the pressure but hold your head there for one minute longer.
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.
Do those methods of release a couple of times a day for a week or so and see if you have problems after that. What you mainly are doing is freeing those muscles up so that whatever triggered them before, which had to be because something got trapped or pinched just right and it spread to the rest of the muscles, is so relaxed that it no longer finds that spot to get trapped in.
Q: What causes recurring migraines?
I find myself suffering from migraines at least twice a week at different times in the day. I drink lots of water, so I know I am not dehydrted. What could be causing these persistent migraines? Any remedies?
A: There are so many causes for migraines and you need an evaluation to determine what might be aggrivating yours.
Sound, light, smells, certain foods and so much more.
Mine were due to chronic sinus. Some of the new over the counter products are excellent, but to be safe seek a doctor for help.
Q: i have really bad neck pain in the back of my neck and it causes migraines i get this every day?
what causes the pain. sometimes its caused when i sleep but latly im fine when i wake up and the just escalates from the time i get up till i go to bed when i go to bed its so bad i cant stand it please help im tired of poppin ib profin.
A: This sounds serious! Neck pain can come from a number of disorders/diseases of any tissues in the neck, such as degenerative disc disease, neck strain, whiplash, a herniated disc, or a pinched nerve. Have you been very active lately? Further testing of undiagnosed neck pain can include x-ray evaluation, CAT scan, bone scan, MRI scan, and electrical tests such as electromyography and nerve conduction velocity test.
I suggest you go to your doctor promptly, this really does’nt sound good, or very comftorbable!
I used to have neck pain alot! This may sound odd, but you may want to consider Lyme disease, which is what i had! This often-misunderstood disease can cause so many symptoms almost anywhere in/on your body, since the bacteria are cork-screw shaped and can “get” through any cell wall in your body. Good luck finding a Lyme-literate doctor. Most doctors still think that a 2 or 3 week course of antibiotics “cure” Lyme, but if you’ve had it for awhile, it may take a year or more. The testing for Lyme is quite inaccurate, with over 60% false-negativesmy doctor says. I don’t want to scare you, but do some research maybe not just the regular clinic sites, but dig deeper. Also, contrary to what experts say, Lyme can and has been found in every state and overseas!
Q: what causes migraines?
usually most people experience migraine every minute of the day usually when there’s a lot of work to do
so i’m just wondering, what causes it?
A: husbands…
Q: What causes migraines?
one year ago i’ve been suffering from it, it stopped for 2 monthes after a Shiatsu session but now i don’t want to repeat it because migraines came back, though they came back less (once a week) but i don’t want to feel that i need a session every now and then.
i dream twice every night and someone (in a dream) told me that i need to stop so much thinking because this could be the reason of the migraines, another one asked me to stop eating chocolate …
i know it sounds funny but this is the truth
this what’s all about
A: lack of liquid in ur body causing blood turns thicker & hard for your heart to pump it to your brain.
Q: Do you also suffer from chronic migraines? If so, what do you do for them?
I have been getting migraines for years. I see a neurologist and I take medication. They won’t go away. I would like to know what you have done to get rid of them, if possible. I am almost in menopause. I have fibromyalgia which also causes migraines.
A: I suffered from migraines for years until i was refered to a “headache specialist”, not a “neurologist”, but a headache specialist, after my initial consultation, she felt that my migraines were caused by a vitamin deficiency, she ordered tests, and sure enough, B12 deficient. Ever since then, i take 1000 mcg of B12 every day and have not even had so much as a hint of a headache since then.
Miraculous drugs for migrines that are available only with a prescription. Migrine drugs arrests the vascular problems that cause the pain within a short period. Contact your doctor to get a prescription for Imitrex or other medicines. Some people can completely control migraine problems with the newer drugs.
Sometimes a cold cloth over your head and a dark room will help.

Q: Can doing to much running cause migraines?
Or is this just a case of needing to drink plenty of water afterwords instead of leaving it to long before the dehydration sets in and causes problems? Please help.
A: definitely a sign of early dehydration.
Water is one of those key things that without it, being healthy is impossible.
you should be drinking at least three bottles (or five glasses) of water each and every day.
Q: Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent Migraines?
My fiance suffers with occasional migraines that are very dibilitating. He doesn’t take any medication for it because they don’t happen that often. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to help prevent them. A couple of my friends have the same problem and it is severe for each of them when it happens. I don’t know much about what causes migraines, or how to treat them, so I was hoping someone here might have some suggestions. Thx So Much!!!
A: I used to get a lot of migraines but once I gave up caffeine they dropped right off to only a couple a year. It might be dietary, your boyfriend should give up caffeine and sugar and see if it helps him. I find that also stress and bright lights are triggers for me. He needs to analyse what’s happening when he gets them. As shown by the variety of answers here what works for one person doesn’t work for another, it’s such an individual thing. He doesn’t need to take medication for it all the time, but the doctor can prescribe things to take when he does get them. I’ve used a nasal spray called Immigran (also available in tablet, but nasal delivery works faster). You use it as soon as you feel the migraine coming on and it kills it off. Instead of being out of action for hours I’m ok within half an hour. Migraines are awful, people who have never had one should be thankful.
Q: Is there any contraceptive pill available in Australia that does not cause migraines?
I was suffering from bad migraines at least once a week or fortnight, sometimes they would even last 2-3 days in a row. By coincidence, I happened to stop the Pill, and the migraines have gone! So it must of been the Pill causing it. I took Levlen 20?
Does any Pill exist that does NOT cause migraines? What about Depo Provera?
A: I also live in Australia and have been suffering from migraines all my life. I have tried many different birth control pills too and they all kept giving me migraines. I’m currently using Microgynon 30 and although I have had a couple of migraines, I don’t believe they were caused by the Microgynon. I also haven’t had any other problems with the Microgynon so far. Have been on it 5 months now.
Good luck
Q: Can the toxins released by deep tissue massage cause migraines?
I am receiving physical therapy and deep tissue massage because of an injury to my neck and shoulders. Since I started I’ve been getting migraines after. I’m drinking lots of water as I was told.
A: Deep tissue massage DOES cause severe migraines. I used to be a massage practitioner and could never get massage because it gave me horrible ones, no matter how much water I drank. I found that about 5% of the clients in my clinic reported them.
I don’t think it’s because of the old “releasing toxins” theory, as it isn’t scientifically sound. I haven’t yet read a good explanation from the studies that demonstrate why it happens.
I had to quit getting massage completely and just get PT. I tried over a dozen types and nothing was any different, no matter what anyone claimed. I tried hot packs, cold packs, gentle stretches, everything imaginable after. The severity of my symptoms did seem to diminish the more massage I had, but but headaches always returned. I never get massage any more, and I don’t give it any more, either!
Q: Can caffeine withdrawal cause migraines in someone who has never had migrainesi?
I went to the ER last night bc for about an hour I had this ring of light showing up in my right eye and whatever I was looking at became blurry and shaky. They said it was most likely a migraine. I didn’t know migraines were this serious! I asked them if it was the wellbutrin I was just prescribed and he said no. This morning I still have eye floaters and remembered I haven’t had coffee in a few days. Could it be from no coffee?
A: you should read this http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/06/hm.caffeine.withdrawal/index.html
Q: I have a history of Migraines. Can antibiotics like amoxicilin cause Migraines?
I have a really bad history of Migraines. I have been on the amoxicilline and it seems lie ever sense I have been on the antibiotics im gettingone and some times two a day. Im taking them for a urinary infection. Does anyone have any Idea or addvise?
A: or maybe your infection triggered a migraine. I get migraines regularly and i know that if something goes awry in my body, I often experience a migraine to go along with it.
Q: Does anyone know of some kind of illness that causes migraines and extremely high blood pressure.?
I have had chronic migraines for at least 10 years now but the doctors never figured out what caused it. We have done all the tests though and I know I at least dont have a tumor. However recently I had my blood pressure checked by 3 fire fighters (it was some community health thing)) and it was 240 over 185. That is normal, no migraine or anything. So they made me start seeing a doctor and we kept recording my pb regularly for a while and that was my resting blood pressure. (however my pulse is normal.) I’m on blood pressure meds now and my doctor has stopped looking for the cause of it.
I mean my mom has high blood pressure but she didnt get it till she was 40 and its no where near mine even at its worst. And i’m only 19, and I’m not over weight so I really dont think it can just be a genetic thing. Not to that extent. So if anyone has every heard of anything like this before any feed back is appreciated. I dont want something to come back and bite me later on in life.
A: Sounds like an uncommon dietary problem. My ex father in law had something like this and it took years to figure out.
There are non-traditional healers who can help you formulate a series of restricted diets to rule out certain common foods. His problem ended up coming from sodium, sulphites and a certain kind of animal protein. Once eliminated from his diet, he was all good.
