Q: Migraine symptoms,best otc product ?
Hi-I have had migraines off and on for years.I have had a dull throbbing pain in my head for two days now, sensitivity to light, sound, extreme fatigue, and feeling weepy-also occasional dizzy feeling.Has anyone here had these symptoms? My other question is which over the counter medicine helps the most?I need one without caffeine-it makes me jittery.I have tried Aleve but it doesn’t make the pain go away. Thanks and GOD-bless
Anmil luver,my period is due next week,so I know what you mean.I may try the excederin. Thanks

A: As a sufferer of menstrual migraine (the cause is obvious lol) I get a severe migraine headache for 5 days straight every month. I have tried all pain killers, most OTC pain killers barely even take the edge off, if at all. The best OTC I’ve found is Excedrin Migraine which does have caffeine in it. It does make me jittery but its the only thing OTC to really help. Also naproxin/motrin will help a little if you take it at the onset of your headache, sometimes during the headache. Its worth a try.

Ultimately, the only Migraine med which actually usually relieves my headache 100% is Imitrex. However without health insurance it is not affordable at all. I cannot afford it anymore, it is $40 a pill even for the generic version. But it does work great. Out of the 100 or so migraines I’ve had in my life I can only think of 3 times that it didn’t help. You are supposed to take it at onset of the migraine which I never do and it normally still works. The stuff is too expensive to just take it when you think youre getting a migraine. lol…its like gold.

Q: Could foods with horseradish be a migraine trigger?
I have been eating horseradish mustard and almost every time I notice migraine symptoms… numb neck, light headed (just a little) weak arms… not necessarily the migraine itself but the other symptoms. Has this happened to anyone with this food before?

A: my mother has food allergies and her reaction is migraines. she has a limited diet, because she cant eat anything artificial (food coloring, flavoring, preservatives) or chocolate or cheese. so im sure it could happen with horseradish or something thats in the mustard.

Q: Can you take calcium channel blockers and beta blockers at the same time for migraine prevention?
I currently take Verapamil (calcium channel blocker) for migraine prevention. It has worked some, but I’m at the full dose and it isn’t enough (I still get daily migraine symptoms if not full on migraines).

Can I take a beta blocker at the same time? Or will I need to get off the calcium channel blocker first? Obvoiusly I’ll talk to my doctor about it as well . . . just wondering what everyone else knows about it. Thanks.

A: Calcium channel blockers and beta blockers taken together can severely drop your blood pressure and heart rate. They need to be prescribed carefully and more likely just one at a time unless you happen to have high blood pressure in addition to the migraines.

Q: What are the symptoms that usually distinguish a headache from a migraine?

A: Bonsoir ma belle ,

The difference between headaches and migraines,,,,,is the level of pain and…..the cause.

The following link will lead you to a page that lists possible Holistic cures for migraines.

http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/headache.html

Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the most amazing cures for headaches and migraines. The trick is to take it at the onset of symptoms. Dosage: 2 TBLS of Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 oz of water, 2x day.

This simple and inexpensive thing can relieve the pain, sometimes within minutes. Bring a small saucepan of water to a boil. Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar. Make a “tent” with a bath towel over your head and breathe in the vapors, deeply and slowly. (If it makes you cough, cut back on the vinegar.) A few minutes of doing this will cure most headaches as well as pills or shots.”

The second link I have researched for you explains how to watch for “triggers” in an attempt to subdue migraines before they peak…

http://www.new-health.biz/articles/article25.htm

I sincerely hope they hold information that you can relate to… and maybe the other folk maybe inclined to take a look too… nothing to lose eh? It is a known fact though, that the brightness of a computer monitor will cause headaches…VDU operators are encouraged to take frequent breaks away from their work station and sit at an angle to the screen…. (its not just the brightness, its something else that is emitted from the monitor… cant recall the name, but…if you suffer from (eye) headaches, then this could be the reason…EYE STRAIN. Take things easy. The stiff neck that accompanies a migraine can also stem from bad use of ergonomics….eg: being sat motionless staring fixedly into your lappy…..

Having said all this, headaches can stem from changes in hormones, can also be a side effect of another medicine….so before you reach for another pill to combat your headache, check any other medication for side effects first. There maybe an alternative.!! God Bless. xx

Q: What are symptoms of a migraine??
I’ve never had a migraine (that I know of) but I’ve never had a headache as bad as I do today. Does anyone know the symtoms of a migraine?? I have a sharp, throbbing pain, going from the base of my neck on the left side through the whole left side of my head, all the way to the middle of my forehead. Lights and sounds are killing me, and I’ve been sick to my stomache since before it started. Any help appriciated!!

A: I can tell you what might help with migraines.

- Make sure you don’t lack minerals in your diet.
- Take potassium
- Drink water with a PH that is at least 7.5. Also make sure it has lots of dissolved solids in it (minerals and trace minerals).

This is how I fixed my migraines. We are getting sicker and sicker each year. There is no explanation other than eating bad food and lacking nutrients that we have evolved with for the last 1000000000 years.

Q: WHAT IS MIGRAINE, ITS SYMPTOMS AND HOW IS IT MANAGED?

A: - a neurological syndrome
- nausea, vomiting, photophobia (increased sensitivity to light), and phonophobia (increased sensitivity to sound)
- with analgesics for the headache, an antiemetic for the nausea, and the avoidance of triggering conditions

Q: Post migraine vision symptoms? Help?
I’m 19 yrs old. I had a migraine a couple of days ago, where I experienced a blind spot and pain which is apparently usual. However, it has been two days since the migraine and I can’t help but noticing that the center of my vision, roughly where the blind spot was, is ever so slightly cloudy, as if the blind spot is still there but not as bad. It’s only very slight but I’m worried as I’m not sure if these kind of symptoms ever persist beyond the migraine itself. It’s mainly noticeable in the dark. Any chance anyone could give me some reassurance or advice? Thanks.

A: Yes, don’t worry. This is called migraine aura. It can last for a few days after and often does. Being dehydrated does not help (you need roughly 8 medium sized glasses of plain water not fizzy or salty per day). Avoid fizzy/soda/caffeninated drinks and alcohol, these also make it worse as can strong offensive smells, red wine/chocolate etc.

Good sleep really helps and darkened rooms make it all bearable. Just take it easy and def. do the water, i seems to really help to make the aura go.

It happens when the migraine sewlling is around the visual cortex and can take many many forms, (zigzag lines, black and white, all sorts everyone is different and sufferers can have differing types as the swelling moves progresses as the migraine goes on)

You will be fine and hopefully something will have rung a bell and you can learn what are your triggers and hopefully minimise future headaches.

Take care and don’t panic, all will be well

Q: Migraine Headache symptoms?
i have migraines, but last night i had symptoms i don’t usually have. can anyone tell me if this is normal? after first becoming nauseated i got a dull headache on the right side of my head, then part of my face on the right went tingly/numb for a couple of minutes and throuhgout the night i felt really cold on the right side of my body. i still have a dull headache and chills on my right side.

A: I’ve had the same tingling happen, but never numbness. Migraines will change/alter in symptoms over time, but if you have numbness and chills it can be a sign for quite a few more dangerous illness’s. Please go see a doctor!

Q: Are my symptoms a migraine or sinus headache?
My symptoms are left and right side headaches, but mostly on my left side, with pain and pressure with swelling in my frontal and cheek area. I would always go to a urgent care clinic and they would take x-ray and say I had sinus infection and gave me antibitoic and sometimes IV. I went to my medical doctor and she thought it was a sinus infection and gave me amoxicillin which helped and made the swelling go down, but comes right back after I stop taking the antibitoic. She also had me get a cat scan and to see a ENT doctor. My cat scan came back normal, but I don’t know if that’s because I was on the antibitoic and it cleared it up and I went ENT and he said I didn’t have sinus, because the cat scan was normal. I went back to my medical doctor and she said I must have migraine then and gave me ibuprofen. So I don’t know if it is just a migraine or sinus headaches or both.

A: I suffer with both sinus problems and migraines so I know the difference. What you are describing sounds like sinusitis. It’s different things that can inflame your sinuses. For me, it is smoke, stiff air, certain scents or too much cold. It recently got horrible where it felt like it was a combo of both sinus and migraine pain. I had started a new job in a night club and it was the fact that it was hot in there, extra smokey without ventilation and me stepping out into the night’s cool air with short dresses and open toe shoes that aggravated my sinuses. I haven’t been back in over a month and still I’ve been having problems but they’re slowly going away and getting better. The only things that help me are taking a hot shower where the whole bathroom is steamy which provides the moisture and warmth your sinuses need and medicine that has a combo of pseudoephedrine hci(can only get this over the counter now) and ibprophen. The pseudoephedrine is the only thing that really helps the sinus pain. Anything else is not worth getting. I almost forgot, Mucinex DM or the one that says it helps with the nasal congestion(I think it’s Extra Strength) really helps too. If it’s as bad as I think it is for you, take a Mucinex in the morning with a full glass of water and a dose of the medicine with the pseudo&ibprophen and then take another Mucinex 8-12 hours later. It works best when you take two daily. If by chance you are plus size like I am, don’t be afraid to take an extra pill of the sinus medicine. If you’re average size then don’t. I hope that helps and I hope you feel better! I know you’re pain but this really helps me…P.S-It may be something in your enviroment that has aggravated this problem if it just started not too long ago. Just think what have you done differently lately. It could be a scent, detergent, new area, anything. You never know what can affect you. Just think about it.

Q: migraine symptoms getting worse! need help!?
hello, my name is shelby and i’m almost 16 yrs old. I am a sufferer of migraines but recently, they have been getting worse. here’s the background story, back in July, i was at my church youth group and we were playing rugby. i’m a small 5′2″ girl and i was playing with a bunch of guys. i got tackled pretty hard and i have severe pain in my head for the net few days without going to a hospital. well, my mom got some sense and took me to a doctor. i had tests run and there was no sign of a concussion but the doctors said that theyre might have been one but since we waited a while to see a doctor, it went away.

ever since then, ive had small headaches here and there but they werent bad and went away with advil. but since about a month ago, ive developed severe migraines and almost went to the emergency room one night. they let up a little for about 2 weeks but ever since yesterday, theyve gotten worse.

i’ve felt more nausea, ive gotten dizzy, there have been some muscle spazzems/twitches, and blood shot eyes. They have gotten to the point that whenever i looked at the smalled candle, i felt like my head was being smashed into a wall. i dont know whats happening or if i should go and see my doctor again. I went about a month ago when they started to get really bad and they tried to send me to a neurologist but, the best pediactric neurologist in Houston doesnt have an opening until JUNE. i think its pretty ridiculous but whatever. and regular neurologists won’t take me cause im under 18.

any suggestions on what i should do? thanks.

A: get medication or epilepsy medication.

Q: What are the symptoms of migraine ?
ok so i woke up today with a really bad headache and i felt really really sick as if im about to puke, i think its called nausea or something. i started puking and didnt go to school today since i was worried i might get sick in class. my mum made an appointment for the doctor and my doctor said i might have migraine. can someone tell me the symptoms of migraine. one thing i can tell you is that whenever i have a headache, i get it from the top of my head on both sides and it lasts for long periods of times. i also start feeling sick and often vomit or puke. my eyes are really sensitive aswell and i start getting blured vision sometimes and when i wake up i have sticky eyes. also if this might help im a female and im 15. if that would help in telling me. i have already visited websites so please dont send me links becuase i dont really understand the sciency language, if you could explain in simple words.

thanks alot

A: What you describe are classic symptoms of migraine headaches, especially the nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity. It is not a big problem though and they are easy to treat. Your doctor should be able to give you a medication that you can take as soon as you feel a migraine coming on which will stop the headache. If you get them frequently, the doctor can also give you a prescription for a medication that will reduce the number of migraines you get, and it also helps to reduce the severity of the migraines when one does break through. I agree with the previous poster that this could have been brought on by a change in your hormones. It is very common for women to develop migraines at certain times during their menstrual cycles. I started getting migraines within a couple of months of my first menstrual cycle at age 11 and have had them ever since.

When you get a migraine, there are a few things you can do to help deal with the pain while waiting for the medication to kick in. Lay down in a cool, dark room with an ice pack on your neck, a cool wet washcloth over your eyes, and some ear plugs to block out all the noise in the house. Once you get into a comfortable position, slow your breathing and start counting your heart beats. Focusing on something else will help you relax. You should go to sleep too, because most migraine medication makes you sleepy, plus rhythmic breathing and counting will relax your muscles. If you can, try and take a nap to sleep through the worst part of migraine. When you wake up, the migraine should be gone and you should feel a little groggy, but much better. Good luck with the doctor.

Q: I think I have a migraine, what are symptoms of a migraine?
For the record, it kills me to be on the computer, but I have to work, and being on yahoo answers makes me look busy, right now I feel like beating the key board on my head to make the pain stop.

A: hi i have suffered from migrane headaches for the past 19 years. These are the symptoms:
1. real intense pain usually starts in the back of your neck
2. you cannot stand the light!
3. any kind of noise will bother you
4. real bad mood
5. throbbing sharp pain in your forhead
6. most of the time only one eye will hurt you, with real sharp pains
7.nausea
8. vomiting
9. usually you can know its coming from the early morning by just the way you have this minor pain in your back ( you will be able to tell once you get to know them well.

if this is what you have i have not found anything better then excedrin or any generic version of it works as well. also getting massaged is what helps me relieve them faster too. just massaging will not do the excedrin has to be the kind that has caffeine and asprin combined. i really hopw this works for you they are really hard to live with. but once you find the reason of what triggers it you will get them less often (like some kind of dairy or something.good luck!

Q: symptoms of a migraine?
could someone tell me all the possibel symptoms of a migraine? could you have a zig zagged distorted shape in your vision before the migraine comes? follow by nausea and headache? my headaches get bad, but they dont seem to last too long usually. is this a migraine?

A: I always get vision distortion as a precursor to my migraines. To be more specific, I start to see pink spot. Then the neck pain starts, followed by the nausea, shoulder pain, light sensitivity then the mother of all headaches. My migraines usually put me out of comission for several hours, and I even had one last a full day before. Since I get them so infrequently (about 4-5 a year), I am not on any prescribed meds. I try to lie in a dark room with a cold cloth over my forehead and eyes, and also a cold cloth across my shoulders around my neck. This seems to help and I try to sleep it off.

Q: Anybody else’s migraine “auras” (“pre-migraine” symptoms) appear as extreme sleepiness?
Mine do…
I get extremely sleepy… then if i don’t go straight to sleep, I develop a slight headache. Then if I don’t take anything for it, I’ll wake up in the night or early morning and the headache has turned to a throbbing/pounding sensation.
Anybody else with symptoms like these?

A: Like JJ I would get blind spots in my vision, but I would also get very sleepy. Most of the time I was able to find a quite dark room to rest in until my medication started working. If I tried to fight the sleepiness I would usually end up getting extremely sick and eventually pass out.

Q: Aura migraine.. stroke like symptoms..pregnancy?
did anyone else begin to have migraines with auras… symptoms very similar to a mini stoke or TIA when they got pregnant because of the change in hormones?? if so, what did you take to relieve the pain???

very scary situation, numbness in one arm… cant talk straight… seeing lights and things move in the corner of your eye..dizziness.. thank god it’s just a migraine though. but yeah back to the question, what’d you do for pain? and how often did it happen to you?

A: This happened to me before, during, and after pregnancy. I know, it’s very scary and debilitating. Honestly, I didn’t do much, but go to bed. I am a less is more kind of person. Sometimes I would take Tylenol, but ask your doctor before you take ANYTHING just be sure that it is safe for you. Good luck.
