Q: What is the strongest antibiotic available for a sinus infection?
I am having pain behind my eyes, and lot of sinus issues. I am on the last day of the antibiotics prescribed last week. I plan to go back today, but would like to know what might actually work.

A: i had great success with sulfa based meds. my daughter in law recommends Z-packs. a nasal flush will help with the pressure. if you,ve never tried Nyquil caps at night, they work. they dry you up, and allow you to sleep. don,t use them during the day. my sister uses eucalyptus oil to clear the sinuses. i,ve never tried that. the sinus flush(target, walgreens) work quite well. they,re kind of messy, so do them over a sink.

Q: I have sinus drainage and a sore throat. What are some over the counter medicines I can take?
My throat hurts really bad and I have a lot of Sinus Drainage. What are some over the counter medicines I can take to make it feel better? I don’t need any remedies, though. Thanks!

A: your question is confusing. anyway, try Dayquil for symptoms. buy and use a sinus flush. any pharmacy carries them. my wife uses one for sinus pressure. it helps. a mix of apple cider vinegar and honey is soothing for a sore throat.

Q: How can i tell if i have a sinus infection or just a common cold?
I dont want to have to the doctor unless i have to. And with a sinus infection would my throat hurt?

A: It’s usually hard to tell but the best way is, take for index finger and your thumb and gently tap the area on the sides of nose. *close to your nose but not on your nose* Your thumb and your index finger should be on either side of your nose.

If it feels sensitive to touch then it’s your sinus’s an infection is usually next… that means you have A LOT of drainage so when you blow your nose, not only will it hurt but the mucus will be discolored so to speak. It’ll range from yellow to green. And yes your throat would hurt. It’s time to see a doctor or get over the counter medication. I typically go to the doctor though.

Q: Does anybody know how to get rid of sinus infections and fluid build up, i think it might be Nasal polyp ?
Does anybody know how to get rid of sinus infections and fluid build up, i think it might be Nasal polyp ?
What is a good way to kill the bacteria besides over the counter drugs.I think i might have nasal polyp i google it up but has anybody really experience with the inffections.
1 second ago – 3 days left to answer.

A: Have you ever been diagnosed with a nasal polyp? Nasal polyps are not common. If you think you have a sinus infection the best approach is nasal irrigation. Most sinus infections are caused by fungi not bacteria. Over the counter drugs, sinus medications and antibiotics don’t work. You need to flush out the fungi and crusted material with nasal irrigation.A quart of mucous has to move through our sinuses every day. When the sinus cavities (there are four sets) get blocked the infected mucous drains down into your throat.) The nasal irrigation should help you get sinus relief right away. Nurse kindheart

Q: What are some of the best home remedies for sinus issues during the fall season?
This is for my friend, who is suffering from severe nasal congestion and sinus pressure. He has tried the Nettie Pot with salt water but it isn’t working, and he wants to stay away from OTC medication – and he’s tried most anyway, but they still have not worked. The doctor has said he’ll need surgery which will include breaking the bridge of his nose and he’s not ready to do that. Any home remedies that you know of would be greatly appreciated!

A: Put half a teaspoon of vix into a large bowl of boiling water and put your face over the bowl and cover your head and bowl with a towel and try to breathe the steam in thru your nose. Keep some tissues handy and blow your nose every minute or so. Try to do it for at least 5 minutes. Do this at least 3 times a day. Also keep up with the salt water nasal irrigation. ps vix is a menthol chest rub here in oz. It is available in our supermarkets so I’m sure you can find some there tho it might be called something else. Good luck

The medical cure for a sinus infection is often to treat it with antibiotics. However, these can have negative side effects and are not effective when taken too often. For these reasons it is helpful to try taking a home remedy for sinus infection. There are some easy sinus home remedies that you can try. These don’t have the side effects of drug medications and can be even more effective in curing a sinus infection.

Sinus infections usually set in after several days of having a cold or the flu. If you are prone to sinus infections try some preventative measures. As soon as you start to get a cold make sure that you drink plenty of water. Fluids will prevent mucous from becoming thick and keep the sinus cavities clear. Increase the humidity level in your home by using a portable humidifier or boil some water on the stove.

Once you get a sinus infection start taking immediate action. Use a steam tent several times a day as needed. To make a steam tent boil a pot of water. Use a towel over your head and stand or sit with your head over the steam. The towel will help keep direct the steam into your nose and mouth. Be careful not to burn yourself. If your sinuses are completely blocked, add an herbal extract to the water. Eucalyptus and menthol help open up nasal passages and make breathing easier.

Nasal irrigator can be used to help open up nasal cavities. It looks like small a teapot that uses warm water to irrigate and open up the sinuses. It can be found at most natural health food stores. Some people may find a nasal irrigator difficult to use but many with sinus problems have used it successfully. It is a natural home remedy for sinus infection.

Herbs have been used for centuries as a sinus infection remedy. They can be safer and more effective alternatives to drug medications. Here are some common herbal remedies for sinus infection that can be easily found at any health food store.

Echinacea – Taken internally, this ancient Chinese herb is known to help treat infections. It is available in capsule, tincture and tea. Do not take this herbal remedy for sinus if you are allergic to ragweed or other members of the aster family.

Astragalus – Another ancient Chinese remedy that is taken orally, astragalus is effective in preventing and treating sinus infections. Available in the form of capsule and tincture, this is usually safe for children. For young children, check with the doctor before administering.

Oregon Graperoot – The berberine in Oregon Graperoot acts as a natural antibiotic that can kill many types of bacteria. It is available in capsule form; follow the directions on the bottle. Do not take if you are pregnant.

Q: Is it possible to have a sinus infection without a fever?
I have all the symptoms of a sinus infection except a fever. Sinus pain and yellow mucus but no fever.

A: yes it is very possible often causes of this are because of an allergic reaction or a cold. for example the allergic reaction will cause a migraine but since you wont be ill at the time it wont cause a fever. another example of this is if you have a cold and blocked up airways then going in high altitudes such as a plane or going deep under water can cause a sinus. eventually however you are more prone to get a fever because of the sinus but only after a period of time.

Q: What is the best treatment for Sinus infections?
I get sinus infections 2 to 3 times a year. There is a lot of drainage that casues throat soarness and a genreal sourness in my sinuses. It typically lasts 5 to 6 days at a time.

A: If it is a true infection then you need antiboitics. I would also recommend steaming your sinuses. Get a pot of boiling water and put your face above it with a towel over your head. Breathe in the steam for 15-20 minutes.

For preventative maintenance, snort salt water up your sinusus. Dissolve salt in water, take a handful and snort it in. It takes a while to get used to the sensation of the water running down your throat, but it cleans out pollen and other irritatants plus moisturizes your nasal passages.

I have a lot of problems with my sinuses and I use a prescription nasal spray daily called Nasonex.

Q: Any suggestions on how to get rid of a sinus infection without needing an antibiotic?
Antibiotics really mess up my bowels so even though I have a prescription for one, I don’t want to use it if I don’t have to. My main symptoms are a nagging cough and sore throat. I have sinus drainage in the back of my throat irritating the throat tissue. This is the 14th day. Any remedies would be greatly appreciated!

A: Here are some all-natural supplements that can be very helpful.

Q: Sinus? Does anyone have panic attacks during the night from sinus and have you got a cure?
I have been having pain attacks because of my sinus and I can’t sleep. Is it normal?

A: When the sinuses are so congested that it impedes breathing air in through the nostrils it may cause a feeling of shortness of breath that is worsened if you are lying flat. When lying flat the mucous is worsened which may cause post nasal drip that further inhibits the ability to breath air in. which may cause anxiety. Try sleeping propped up on 2- 3 pillows use a cool mist humidifier and ask your pharmacist or see your doctor for some meds that will help alleviate sinus issues. Make sure it is your sinuses and not a serious problem.

Q: What is the name of the sinus behind your ear?
I’m having pain behind my right ear and my M.D. said it was a sinus problem. I can’t find the name of this sinus anywhere.

A: The term “sinuses” usually refer to the paranasal sinuses. There are many other sinuses not only in the skull but throughout the human body. The term sinus is Latin for “bay”, “pocket”, “curve” or “bosom.”

The paranasal sinuses are not the only sinuses within the skull; the mastoid cells in the mastoid bone around the middle ear are also a type of sinus.

Paranasal sinuses are air-filled spaces, communicating with the nasal cavity, within the bones of the skull and face. Humans possess a number of paranasal sinuses, divided into subgroups that are named according to the bones within which the sinuses lie:

The maxillary sinuses, also called the maxillary antra and the largest of the paranasal sinuses, are under the eyes, in the maxillary bones (cheek bones).

The frontal sinuses, over the eyes, in the frontal bone, which forms the hard part of the forehead.

The ethmoid sinuses, which are formed from several discrete air cells within the ethmoid bone between the nose and the eyes.

The sphenoid sinuses, in the sphenoid bone at the center of the skull base under the pituitary gland.

Q: Are antibiotics necessary to clear up sinus and ear infections?
I’m pretty sure I have a sinus infection and am prone to ear infections (which is kind of odd for an adult) and I don’t want to go to the doctor to get antibiotics. Do these things clear up on their own eventually? I’ve been doing a sinus rinse 2xs daily hoping this will clear it up.
Christina G – thanks for the pic. I’m going to give this a go.
M B – that’s a great idea. I’m going to add this to my list of remedies.

A: I had problems for years with this but about10 years ago a friend made me lay down and put hydrogen peroxide in my ears—two time a day for a couple days should work and it also took care of the sinus infections although i dont know why–pour just a small capful pour in your ear and lay down–about 10 minutes or when the bubbles have almost stopped–ive never used nose sprays or cold meds again–however i do take a visteril ( benadryl) 1 a day and any time i feel one coming on i do this and it stops mmediatly–no q-tips!!
