Q: Ophthalmic Migraine?
“spots of light, halos, or zigzag patterns are common symptoms prior to the start of Migraine headaches. An ophthalmic migraine is when you have only visual symptoms without a headache.”

I have been diagnosed with the symptoms of ophthalmic migraines, however, my symptoms are permanent and are not episodic. Does anyone know of any similar cases or where I could even start to look to get evaluated by the right people for this?

Q: What is the treatment of ophthalmic migraine?

A: Ocular, Optical, and Opthalmic Migraines
Although many individuals are diagnosed with optical, ocular, and opthalmic Migraine, these are not standard diagnoses according to the International Headache Society. Find out what these types of Migraine are more commonly called.

Migraines are a neurological disorder, to which there is no cure. If you get 3 or more migraines a month, you should talk to your doctor about preventive treatment options. That would be something you would take everyday. For an actual migraine attack, there are triptans that most migrainuers can take, but you would have to check with your doctor first.

Q: Does this sound like a Ophthalmic Migraine?
I was sitting at the computer when I noticed that the vision in my right eye started getting blurry. It was blurry in the center. It freaked me out so I went and lied down on the bed. Then the vision in that eye got very flashy/shimmery. Like heat coming of the road. Also a yellow and blue zig zag pattern appeared. I’d say it lasted about ten minutes.

A: This is called an aura and is connected with migraine. However, some people get the aura experience and no headache following (as you did) and some people get the headache with no aura preceding it (as I have done) and some people get both. If you do get migraine headaches they are usually associated with nausea and photophobia. Sometimes my skin would feel painful as well which was nasty. There are fortunately excellent prescription medications which work really well. Please see your doctor if you get another aura “attack.” You were wise to rest and not continue on the computer which could have made the whole thing worse.

Q: Ophthalmic Migraine problem?
Ever since I was in 7th grade I have had on and off zig zaggy lines in the peripheral of my vision for 15-20 minutes. I am 14 now and I am sick and tired of going through this 2 times every single month. Its like my brain has a calender and it sets a day out of each month to put me through 15 minutes of hell. It happens at the worsts times, like at school, hanging out with friends, or whenever I am in a position to not be ready for something like this. I don’t know what to do! Is there a treatment, or some technique to make these episodes not happen as frequently? Please help me!

A: Wow, I get those too…I first started getting them after I had Lasik surgery on my eyes, and I thought I was going blind!

I went to a doctor who told me that the causes of opthalmic migraines are not well understood. He said the best thing you can do is lay down in a dark room until it passes. He says there is some research to indicate that spiked stress levels sometimes cause the migraines. Also, he said excessive caffeine intake may trigger them. My only advice is to try to stay stress-free and caffeine-free. Other than that — good luck.

Q: Can Ophthalmic Migraines be linked to more serious conditions?
Can Ophthalmic migraines be caused by anything? I have had 4 in the last year and 2 this week.
Could my Ophthalmic migraines be linked with the fact I was rushed to hospital with suspected appendicitis and never diagnosed (definitely not ovarian cysts as they were ruled out with internal & external ultra sound scans).
Could the two things be a sign of another condition they didnt think of in the hospital?
Could the above symptoms be linked to the fact I have started taking the contraceptive pill Yasmin in the last month?
Why cant the GP diagnose me? Can something really just be a blip? I’m very tired also. Could this be linked with anaemia? Although in the hospital they didnt think I was anaemic, just said that my white blood cells were low….. Any ideas? This is getting really worrying now…
I’m 21. I’m also a smoker but I have recently cut down a lot with the aim to quit asap…. That article certainly makes sense and will help me to quit more.

Would you mind expanding on the Multiple sclerosis? Did you have any other symptoms? How old were/are you?

A: Birth control pills and migraines. How old are you?
And are you a smoker?

Be careful out there and read your warning labels, ok?
I developed migraines in my 20’s after the birth of my son and my doc took me immed. off of oral contraception d/t the risk, and I am not even a smoker….

and yes, bcpills d/t hormones can increase your # of migraines. You need to let your doctor know about this asap!

Q: Is this a migraine? Am I okay?
In the last couple of months I’ve had 2-3 episodes where one of my eyes got zig-zaggy lines with blind spot for about 20 minutes, then went away. I wrote it off as an “ophthalmic migraine,” from what I read on google. Then today I was getting my nails done when I had that same symptom in both eyes. It started to go away, and then I got the most fearsome headache ever on the top right of my forehead, along with nausea but no vomiting. I went home after pulling over til I could drive again, took a 45 minute shut-eye, and felt much better. I still feel kind of like a mild normal headache right now, hours later, especially if I move my head quickly, but it feels like it’s getting better.

I’m 26 years old, and have never even had a real headache before, let alone something like this. Is it normal to get a first migraine at my age? Is that what this was? I’m getting myself pretty worked up about having brain cancer or something awful

A: I would definitely go to the doc and describe the symptoms. I have been a migraine sufferer for many years and I would probably just chalk it up to a migraine if this hadn’t been your first one. Especially where you go from having zero to having 2-3 in few months. I’ve always had horrible headaches, I can’t remember when I didn’t have them…Better safe than sorry.

Q: ophthalmic migraines?
What is it? What are the symptoms? Is there a teatment? I know it as nothing to do wiyh pregnancy my question but i always have good answers from you ladies. I have tryd on the health department but no answers.
Thank you Tabby you sure did help me .

A: The term “migraine” usually brings to mind a severe type of headache. But visual disturbances with or without headache pain also can accompany migraine processes thought to be related to changes in blood flow in the brain. These visual problems associated with migraines technically are known as ophthalmic migraines. read more on this site http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/ocular-migraine.htm it tells you the Symptoms, What to Do if I Have it, and Treatments…hope i helped

Q: Questions about migraines (did I have one? Is it normal?)?

A: You really need to go to a doctor as soon as possible. You may even want to go to the emergency room. Your headaches could be something small and simple or something as serious as a brain tumor or stroke. I am not a doctor and am not in the medical field, but what you’ve described does not sound normal to me.

Q: Head pressure? or something?
Original Post :

“Ever since I was in sixth grade (i am now 20), I got “ophthalmologic migraine’s”. I’d see weird lights, like tv snow, and then lose my vision for about an hour at most, then got a HORRIBLE migraine. But recently I had one, and it hasnt went away. I feel like im stuck in the first 5 minutes of that kind of headache, where I can see, but not see everything. Like a blind spot. What should I do? my eyes feel strained, and I dont have a headache. Please help. It feels like something is missing out of the picture.

Also, I have a pituitary tumor, but its a microadenoma. The surgeon said it was not causing these headaches. That was a year ago.

Please help “

So i went to the Ophthalmologist and they ran every test possible for my eyes. The doctor told me my eyes are perfect. I just have an astigmatism. He took pictures of my retina and said that if there was pressure on my optic nerve from the tumor, hed see something.

He said it could be pressure in my brain, or lack of blood flow. Like “falling asleep on an arm.”

What could this possibly mean? I went for an MRI/MRA today but it got canceled until next week.

What could any of this mean?

Additional information:

I have an under active thyroid (not from the tumor, the tumor doesn’t affect any hormones)
Aortic Stenosis, Aortic regurgitation, and high blood pressure, Asthma, Ophthalmic migraines and Mental issues as well.

anyone know what to do?

A: And you are 20? If the doc said your eyes were perfect then maybe it is something mental going on. Sorry. On the other hand tests dont always show everything but it looks like they pretty much did the tests that would show something if it were there.

Q: I just temporarily lost 1/4 of vision in my left eye.?
I suffer(through self-diagnosis) from aura migraines. Where you have tiny lines in your eyes that sorta zigzag.

I was on my computer just now and a bright looking light formed in the upper right corner of my left eye and I couldn’t see anything except the bright light and about 1/4 of my vision was gone. It only lasted about 40-60 seconds then it went away, now I feel like I am getting a migraine.

What is this? I’ve found info on “ocular or ophthalmic migraine” could that be it? Would you go to the ER or a 24 hr eye clinic if you were me?

A: Yes it is probably ocular migraine aka migraine with aura with or without headache. I’ve been getting them for years. The bright lights appear in my peripheral vision and look like lightening bolts (usually lasting about 20 minutes), sometimes accompanied by partial vision loss (like I can only see part of an object). More often than not, I do not get a headache. The problem with Ocular Migraines without headache is that the symptoms emulate those of a Retinal detachment or tear, especially if you also have floaters. It is therefore, a good idea to see and ophthalmologist or optometrist for a comprehensive dilated exam on an annual basis.

Everyone should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every few years. Most of us don’t see an Ophthalmologist or optometrist until we have a real problem, which might have been prevented or minimized if we had regular exams.

Q: could it be a brain tumor?
I am really freaking out here and need some insight. I just finished an anatomy class and we had a section on this, so maybe that’s just kind of made me a hypochondriac.
I’ve always suffered from headaches (I’m 16). It runs in our family. Lately they have been getting progressively more severe and more frequent. It starts as a pressure behind my eyes and radiates around to the back of my head. I’ve also noticed that my right eyelid has began drooping. Not all the time, but fairly often. I went to my regular practitioner and he sent me to an ophthalmologist. They did tests and said there is nothing wrong with the nerves or muscles in my eye and mentioned a few possible causes like cluster headaches or ophthalmic migraines.
The past week or so I’ve been really mood and short tempered. That’s just not usually like me. Yeah I get mad of course but I;ve been snapping at people really often over small things. It’s really just not like me. And I’ve just felt depressed and gloomy. It’s really affecting everyone around me, particularly my girlfriend. It’s killing me.
The ophthalmologist scheduled me for an MRI in the next few days. The doctor never mentioned a tumor, but is it a possibility? I just want to know whats wrong with me!
The MRI was totally the Doctor’s doing. I didn’t ask him or tell him anything about my fear. Since they waited till after Christmas to schedule it I’m assuming that they don’t think it’s anything too serious or urgent.
I’ve also started having some muscle twitches mainly in my right arm. I don’t know if that’s anything major or related.
and I do have an appointment already scheduled with a neorologist that specializes in headaches. The reason I went to the doctor is when my eye started drooping. That’s the main thing we’re trying to figure out now. I’ve just been speculating on my own…..

A: No one can say you don’t have a brain tumor but given your story I’d say its very very unlikely you have headaches caused by a brain tumor. You are getting an MRI anyway which will likely be therapeutic (for anxiety) if not particularly revealing otherwise.

Try to relax in the short term. In the longer term, you should see a headache specialist for your probable migraines.

Q: ophthalmic migraines???
What are they ? What is the symptoms? Is there a treatment?

A: Don’t bother about type but treatment.
pl see what suits you.
If you are in cold country use all warm things.
Pl try cold water bath and observe if in hot country, if pain increases use warm.
If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help.
Massage and exercise in front of morning sun is good thing, pl try.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing, Stomach ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don’t treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits like dates, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves’ juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.

A: I have the exact same thing. One of my eye lids has been drooping lately too and ive always had really bad migraines. It also runs in my family. I think the drooping eye has to do with me not getting as much sleep lately and from smoking too much. I also get eye twitches every so often.

I really doubt its a brain tumor and youre probably fine, since migraines run in your family. Just drink a lot of water to help your headaches. It never hurts to get it checked out if youre really worried though.
